thank you for your take on this. "sharing your feelings" on a particular issue does nothing to help solve or bring change to an issue. You needs tactics for dealing with these scenarios as a celebrity... which is my problem with Chappell roan. I don't think she wanted a solution for such fan interaction as much as she wanted the chance to be a victim.

I don’t care how controversial it is or how people feel about what I say. There are way too many examples, currently and in the past, of the pitfalls of celebrity so I don’t really care to see people who openly choose to pursue that life complain about what they’re going thru. Nobody said you have to be in that space and that spot you currently occupy will gladly get filled by someone else soon enough. They should be fighting the more important fight with what we all should now know about as it relates to these artists’ battles and treatment behind closed doors instead of complaining about fanatics who’ve made it possible for these people to live a life of privilege most wouldn’t have known they’d have until they had their art patronized and obsessed over.

I don’t get what was confusing about Chappell’s post. She’s clearly addressing the people that don’t respect her boundaries and treat her as if they’ve known her their whole life and those who feel entitled to more than just her music such as her personal life, yet she doesn’t even know their name. It is weird behaviour.

Beyonce has had many artists criticize her she refuses to help anyone but herself become successful others becoming successful must to be a threat to Beyonce she is dangerous she’s like Diddy promise people to help them become a great artist only using them to advance their career needs not the artist who should look for other reputable companies that will give them the support needed jealousy not being involved in the contract it’s only about making money for the artists and owners of entertainment industries..

Tbh, I feel more for Doja's approach because it was more personified. As a grown ass person (with a dose of stan experience to other person, no less!), I did agree with her. Chappel sounded more patronizing, talking about basic ass, easy things as taking pictures (yes, you might not feel like it, and yes, you might decline, and yes, fan might feel sad, but he/she will process it if they have any sort of self-awareness) as if it was some sort of unseen behavior, she came off as she is expecting you to consume her product but shut the heck up about anything that comes with you're being sold to consume more. Namely, Doja's feuding/banter with stans empowers you to have some degree of personal responsibility ("you stream if you like, you shake ass if you like, it's your business, we are not friends, if you don't like it, you may unstan" - "fine, i will"), while Chappel just shames you out of the blue ("you're OUGHT to behave this or that, or otherwise, you're not normal"). Hear me out. If you're a random lady on the street, go work as a cashier at the supermarket, selling other people's goods that I might occasionally need. If you're a CELEBRITY that RELIES on a SMALL % OF STANS OVERCONSUMING YOUR PRODUCT to support your lifestyle and make you shitloads of money, you can't have your cake and eat it too, (not) sorry. So, you WANT this parasociality to work for you and sell your stuff, but you're hissing at the minor inconveniences (ofc I don't talk real extremes like physical stalking or criminal behavior) that come with it? THEN pretend to make it about "aLL wOmYn xPeRiEnCe" to secure brownie points from media? Spare me. If you want me to support your craft to an absolutely irrational levels, buying your subpar merch, listening to your subpar music, going to your subpar shows, you'd BETTER talk nice to me and make effort to SELL me those products. It's basic form of marketing. Stans carry your paper edifice on their backs unpaid. There's way too much offer in this overconsuming, trashy, useless industry for me to care through the disrespect.

I didn't have an issue with what Chappell was saying until she canceled concerts in intimate venues for her fans who bought tickets before she blew up with GLB to practice for her VMAs performance. I understand she has a team who obviously wanted her to prioritize being on a highly visible stage like the VMAs, but it literally went against everything she's been preaching and makes her come across as disingenuous. If you hate being recognized and want to be left alone when you're out in public, making an appearance on the VMAs is definitely going to worsen that issue... There's a disconnect with her being a rising artist and her team wanting her to be out there and what she wants for herself. With her second album, hopefully she has more freedom in her decisions and can intentionally make herself more elusive like Lorde or Fiona Apple because you really cannot have it both ways. So many celebrities before her have made sacrifices to minimize their public personas to escape harassment and it won't be different for her just because she called it out. Celebrity culture sadly will never change.

I’m gonna say something that really shouldn’t be controversial. Public figures don’t get to clock out. Tf? I thought people knew this. Obama doesn’t get to stop being Obama, Lebron James doesn’t get to just stop being king james the best player in the world. Every hour of the day they are what they are, they will always matter, they will always be watched and recorded 24/7, and pop stars are no different because they’re public figures, this is the monkey paw. People keep saying a singer’s job is to sing nothing else, and that’s true. But Chapelle is not a singer. And she never wanted to just be “a singer”. If all she did was sing nobody would gaf about her, she’s a damn **POP STAR.** And when you’re a POP STAR there ain’t no “clocking in”, “clocking out” like a regular job. What don’t people understand about this? You’re not working a regular job, that’s why you wanted to be a pop star cause it’s better than a regular job. You don’t get regular pay cheques at regular dates, you don’t get regular opportunities, you don’t get a regular social status, you’re not brushing shoulders with regular people day to day. So sorry, you don’t get to clock in clock out like a regular job. You didn’t want a regular job, and rightfully so cause regular jobs suck, and when we regular folk complain, it doesn’t go viral. You wanted to be Hannah montana. Ok, so now you’re gonna get what Hannah Montana got. That’s how it works, it’s called risk reward, it’s called the law of equivalent exchange. People are miserable today because they’re always fantasizing about ideals. All they care about is what should happen, and how things should be, well sorry but things will never be how things should be, so if utopia is your win condition, you’re gonna lose. If all you want is a flawless life then you ain’t ever gonna get what you want. You ain’t ever gonna get the best of both worlds, cause this ain’t the best world, welcome to earth. Only children fantasize about fairytale life an utopia and very thing being perfect and nobody messing with them ever. But when people get called out for acting exactly like children, and thinking like a child, they start crying. This is 2024, you knew damn well what would come with the game, I’m tired of hearing celebrities moan over the dark side of fame when, feature length documentary after feature length documentary about pop stars across time and space warned them what was coming. You were warned about the inevitable invasion/annihilation of privacy. They warned you. How many examples of people getting burned do you need to see before you realize fire is hot, stans come with fame. You can google this, you can ask chat gpt, and it’ll break it down point blank simple. This isn’t a problem this isn’t a bug, this is a feature it’s caked in built in to the pop star industry. This is like if I became a construction worker and cried online cause I got my hand cut picking up a screw driver, this is like if I became a cop, then cried online cause someone eventually punched me in the face. It’s an occupational hazard. An inevitable one. A googleable one. Stop complaining. It’s crazy cause the weeknd literally laid the groundwork in 2011 for being an artist and keeping anonymity. Of course he abandoned that for higher heights and greater rewards, but that’s the thing. He chose to abandon it. The same way she chose to tell the world her real name and showed her face, that’s why you don’t hear the weeknd crying. Sabrina carpenter got briefed on this that’s why you don’t hear her crying. Somehow roan managed to dodge 100 years of pop star history, in the age of the internet.

That’s 1000% normal 😂 I’m gonna continue to laugh at pop stars complaining about menial famous people stuff, they deserve to be laughed at it, that’s peak first world “problems” and it’s taking shine a way from actual issues all around the world.

You blatantly in your first post pointed out that this is an issue you’re facing cause of fame, not XX chromosomes. It’s so obvious she’s just trying to assemble the feminist avengers to protect her from mean posts online. Ironically displaying exactly why people idolize look up to her and lust to be around her. There's a fundamental misunderstanding going on in this discussion. The complaint that "you don't really know this celebrity from what you've heard them say and seen them do" is true. But it's true for every person in your life, not just celebrities. You don't know all about your mother from your interactions with her, or your teacher, your boss, co-workers, doctor, friends. The only things you know about them are what they chose to tell you and what you've seen them do. Celebrities are acting like they're special here, but they're not.

I'm on Chappell Roan's side. Fans need to learn the difference between healthy passionate admiration of an artist that's still respectful and tactful vs outright crossing the line into disrespectfully infringing upon the artists' boundaries and turning into crazy, aggressive, hyper entitled and unhinged stalkers with no respect for others. This is exactly what Eminem was warning us about in "Stan", and that was 24 years ago! So yeah, Chappell's right and anybody that has a problem with it is part of the problem and needs to check himself or herself and reevaluate their attitudes and behavior. And frankly we need to stop weaponizing the "yOuR FaVeS aReN't BuIlT fOr FaMe!" argument because now it's just being more and more of a weaponized deflection and gaslighting tactic by people to gaslight and manipulate celebrities into tolerating abuse while not wanting to look at themselves and not wanting to hold themselves accountable for their lack of class or boundaries or rexamine how they don't have much going on in their own lives outside of idolizing celebrities and being creepy, weird, annoying, disturbed and pitiful about it. It isn't about people being "built for fame", it's about people finally putting their foots down and rightfully refusing to tolerate abuse and the fans needing to check and humble themselves to treat the artist with the same respect in return. Point blank period.

This is such a bone headed take. Deciding that you want to be known for your career shouldn’t open you up to harassment, stalking and general obsession and even abuse. People really do not seem to grasp just how dangerous this shit can get. Christine Grimme was killed by a fan. Jodie Foster was stalked as a child by a man who then grew up to carry out an assassination attempt on a president. Justin Beiber was constantly sexually harassed by adults. Someone saying that they are not going to accept that behavior doesn’t mean they aren’t built for fame. It means they are asserting their boundaries and protecting themselves and their families! And that is their right! We do not own or know these people. The only thing they ‘owe’ us is their work.

@@AlexKamillaKroy and (controversial opinion) there’s nothing wrong with that. I do not think celebrities are obligated to take pictures with fans if they aren’t at concerts or red carpets or fan conventions etc etc. Again, they don’t owe you anything. They provide entertainment and we consume the entertainment. That’s where the transaction ends. If you’re so pressed about it, you could always just stop supporting and pour your energy into a celebrity that actively encourages weird parasocial relationships. Not everyone is obligated to do that. They do not owe you a second of their time when they aren’t on the clock the same way you dont owe your boss your time when you’re off work. And side note- she talked way way more about just taking pictures.

the stalking is never good but celebrities do owe their fans some sort of appreciation for supporting them. how you say no (even to random people) still matters. fans still deserve to be treated as normal people, even if you're having a bad day or whatever. the extreme does deserve to be called out, but there are normal people who ask nicely who still get treated badly for supporting their faves.

THIS. This is my issue. She can turn away the sane fans with a simple “no” or “no thank you”. A picture and an autograph is beyond normal celebrity fan culture. The stalking/harassment is the thing she should call out. It’s a weird thing to conflate two very different fan behaviors. Also, if she doesn’t want normies approaching her she should get security guards like 99% of the other celebrities.

And according to alot of celebrities it's not. Don't get me wrong, ppl really do deserve their personal space. Especially if you're a really private person. When you're a celebrity or public figure you're gonna be bothered alot. Regardless if you like it or not. Usually it's because they adore you or really like you. Also other stuff. Chapelle needs to figure out a way to handle this. And stop whining & crying trying to play victim. It's straight dumb. Bad Bunny seems like Kanye West. Most of these people know full well they’re in it for the fame, money, and glory but they don’t understand that this is no longer the time where you can just put out music and be well off without doing anything else. People ain’t buying music, we’re streaming it. That doesn’t pay well at all so if they want to actually make this a viable career for themselves they have to make themselves available to their audience in various ways and only once they reach a certain level of success and power will they be able to go away from the spotlight and just be more reclusive.
